I need a small wire welder. $400-$500 range. My son and I have a project vehicle and we need to replace rusted panels. I need some recommendations please.
Look for a machine that gives you flexibility and the most control. Look for a inverter based machine and a machine that allows you to adjust inductance. For the money spent I would have to give a strong rating towards the Titanium 170 Mig from Harbor Freight. Alternatively you could go up a little and go with a Everlast or Alpha. Plenty of reviews on line about these three I mentioned. The Hobart and Lincoln in these price points are all old transformer based machines and lack control and output. I own the Titanium 170 and a Esab 141i as my quick carry welders in my service truck. The Titanium was bought in 2018 when they first came out and has been a dependable unit with a minimum 50lbs of wire run through it with nothing more than basic gun consumables needed.
I have a Lincoln 130
What you want the most from any machine is the gas option.
I bought it for doing patch panels on another project but did floors, cab corners, rockers and much more on my truck.
But have also cranked it up to weld the axle tubes to the center housing and spring purches on my drag car.
