Steering gearbox

My steering gearbox is gushing out fluid right above the pitman arm. Can I get away with just a new seal, or will i need to replace the entire ger box? I have a 1993 F250 4wd.

You probably should change the box, it makes a big different in steering feel, my steering feels so much better.

Steering box

Seeing that mine is also leaking, how much would a new /reman. box cost?

I need to fix that and the exhuast manifold leak.. and then she's up for sale.. Looking for a newer model ext. cab 4wd pickup...

Changed my Steering box,and got a new alignment when finished, what a joy it is to drive my truck, Autozone has them in stock for 169.00, and they are guaranteed for life, also the Haynes manuel goes into some really good detail on how to change your box out. I had someone help me only for some support on mounting it back on the frame, other than that I never did a Steering box change before, nor did my helper, we got it done in Five hours and this included a hour and half lunch break. Change the box you will like the feel of your truck sooooo much better.

The box is held on the frame by 3 bolts. I highly suggest getting a new pitman arm instead of trying to get the old one off (it's not easy). Then just remove the bolt for the steering shaft and slide it off. You might need a small torch to loosen the power steering hose fittings, sometimes they get tight. I couldn't get mine off without breaking them so I had to buy new ones (not too much money). It's good to have a buddy remove the 3 bolts on the frame while you're under the truck holding up the box, it's very heavy and hard to unbolt and hold at the same time.

If the PS lines are tough to get off, just go buy new ones. They are not that expensive (as stated by MustangGT221) and are one less thing to worry about in the future. The pitman arm, on the other hand, is a snap to get off, if you use the pitman arm puller tool. Autozone has them to rent for 20 bucks, and REALLY make it a cake-walk to get the arm off. Many ppl say it's a fairly difficult job to do, but I managed to get it out and replaced in about 2 hours with the right tool.

Good luck with yours.
Luke

I had a puller and I ended up cutting mine off with a cut off wheel when I had to put a drop pitman arm on my truck after a lift. Check out the price of a pitman arm, it might be cheaper than the tool lol.

The autozone tool rental fee is just a deposit...you get that back when you return it. Secondly, it depends how much rust built up in your pitman arm splines as to how hard its going to be.
