looking to see if this is normal, i have a 2019 6.7 ccsb , i live in michigan and just trying to figure out how long it takes to clear the ice off my windshield . I can let the truck run for 20 minutes and the temp gauge will not show any temp at all and will not clear the ice off . Took the truck to the dealer and they say all is normal . I do have the supplemental heater , and when driving temp is fine
The 6.7 will take forever to idle to temp. It’s best to cover the windshield (to minimize the ice) and give it 30 seconds or so (to circulate fluids) and drive. Waiting for it to warm up while just idling will take ages.
Live just North of Chicago here in Illinois and on my last F250 Diesel I also had the 'Supplemental Heater' option, and personally as far as I could tell it didn't do anything at all. Maybe was just mine, but truck is garage kept and it would still take a while to warm up. Thank goodness for heated seats otherwise the wife would never ride in it (although heated seats isn't going to help with what your asking about).
What I've done on all my vehicles is use some automotive ice melt spray and add it into the washer fluid. It seems to help clear the ice and snow off a little quicker.
is 30 degrees out , max defrost setting , and .25 inch of ice on the truck , truck has to set outside due to no garage , just wondering if this is normal or not , thinking about doing the high idle resister on an upfitter switch to help

Thats not very cold and your truck should be blowing warm enough air to heat the windshield in 20min. Do you have auto climate control? If you don’t, don’t have the fan speed turned all the way up. Run it half to 3/4 speed. You’re truck should have an automatic high idle that should engage at that temp so the high idle mod, which I have done, will only give you about 100rpm more unless you use a different resistor or make it adjustable to 1400-1500rpm.
Recently the temp has been about -10C (14F) where I live and my window is clear of .15” ice in 15min command start cycle. It would be nice if the windshield wipers would work during a command start cycle to help the process but they don’t.
These diesels don’t warm up very fast and is the biggest reason I switched from Dodge to Ford. Fords warm up way better than the Rams.
They make windshield snow covers that you can put on the windshield. https://noblerate.com/best-windshield-snow-covers/ Rain X or some other hydrophobic glass sealant makes it harder for the frost on ice to stick to the windshield. Then there is the 12 v plug in heaters you can buy.
so what are the criteria for the factory high idle to become activated ,i cannot find that info and the truck has not gone into high idle even on colder mornings when using the remote start
“In cold weather below 32°F (0°C), the engine may slowly increase to a higher idle speed if you leave it idling in park (P). As the engine warms-up, the engine sound level decreases due to the activation of PCM-controlled sound reduction features.”
This is probably the issue. It’s not cold enough or it’s right on the borderline to not engage the automatic high idle. If your truck is only idling around the 700rpm mark, it won’t be high enough to warm the engine enough to start blowing strong heat. The automatic high idle should rev around 1100rpm and the high idle mod I did revs around 1200rpm. Maybe the high idle mod is something to try. I did it because I like tinkering and idle my truck a lot in arctic temperatures. To be warned, the passthru wires on the passenger side kick panel are extremely short and frustrating to connect a wire to. I assume you would run the high idle to an upfitter switch.
Here is the video I used to do the mod. 20k ohm 1/2watt resistor is what I used to get to 1200rpm. Parking brake engaged and upfitter switch on and it will rev up to 1200rpm on start up. Took about 2hrs cause my neighbours kept coming over to see what I was doing. Lol.
You can use a potentiometer and have it adjustable which does not require the e-brake to be engaged but it was more than I wanted to do.
My truck had ice on it and in less than 10 min (it didn't turn off from the remote start) 80% of the ice was gone off the windshield, it was probably 1/4" thick too. I do have the supplemental heater option though, if you want it to warm up faster I suggest plugging it in or covering the windshield.
I had to drive my wife's car during the first snowstorm of this season. I didn't prepare well. The vehicle was parked outside and I forgot to put the windshield cover on. Scraping the thick ice off wasn't happening. I sat there and waited for it to warm up enough to get heat to the defroster. That took a good 10 minutes until I saw results, 15 minutes until I felt it was clear enough to drive.
If I had used the cover it would have been all of 2 minutes to remove the cover, clear it of snow/ice and stow it in the cargo area. I should get a cover for my F-350 even though it's stored in the garage most of the time.
