Going to do injectors and glow plugs and possibly a new HPOP. My question is what else can I update while I have the valve covers and HPOP off? Oil lines, o-rings, fittings, dummy plugs and so on???? I want to make sure everything is sealed before I button everything up. Thanks for any info
I would leave the stand pipes alone,as it's a very rare occurrence you will have issues with those. I'll also add that many times you end up twisting them off to get them out just to replace the lower o ring that rarely fails. Early builds don't have the same SP and DP problems as the late '04 and up did.
If you do replace the HPOP, consider spending a little extra on an Adrenaline pump.
The odds are you already have the updated oil cooler cover. Only the early release 03 had that goofy snap to connect turbo supply line.
If your supply line is held on by one bolt at the oil cooler cover it's not the early release 2003. If it's a snap to connect style fitting then yeah, you'll need the update cover and supply line if you choose to do that update.
If you do take the HPOP cover off, use the good Motorcraft sealant meant for that specific application.
I would have both sides glow plug harness on hand. They get brittle and the odds are you'll break at least one plug somewhere.
It really is a shame that pretty pump is covered up
Well mine is out in that ziploc bag while my engine is upside down and stripped down to the short block in my shop right now...but the pump has been flawless for many thousands of miles! It’s the high output model to keep up with larger injectors etc.
You can replace the braided hoses that connect the standpipes to oil rails but if they are in good shape I’d leave them alone. If you want to upgrade to the newer style HPOP you can but you would need to pull the engine out to remove your branch tube that links HPOP and standpipes, replace branch tube, HPOP, HPOP cover and oil rails. I like the early style HPOP system.
Yes if you read my post earlier I mention the higher output HPOP.
I replaced mine but the old ones looked fine. Did the stand pipes as well, they will get your heart rate up as they twist about a 1/4 turn before they break loose. I went with the Motorcraft HPOP, working fine for over a year.
Ok thanks guys. I’m staying with stock injectors so I didn’t know if the high out output pump would justify the cost? Is there much of a performance increase by doing the high output HPOP on stock injectors?
Check the discharge tube (that bolts to the top of the hpop) for chafing as it's possible that it rubs against the hpop cover; one reason these two items are recommended updates -
These other items are not related to the specific engine work you're doing but low cost things worth serious consideration. Something nobody ever mentions is the water pump pulley. The ones on the 05's and up have a much thicker wall so they don't sheer off -
A couple of other things to consider:
1. Exhaust manifold gaskets. These trucks have none from the factory. I did mine after getting migraine headaches, complete with early-onset auras. Gaskets and new up-pipes did the trick.
2. Yellow ring style oil level dipstick as opposed to the t-style that always breaks and gets in the way when pulling the air filter assembly.
3. 6.4L transmission filter and pan.
