Question fire question

I don't have an oxy torch, but am in need of some well placed heat. What kind of gas that I can get in the plumbing aisle at the Depot will give me the hottest flame?

Thanks.

The MAPP gas burns hot enough to solder? I though propane was hot enough to solder with. Do you mean hot enough to braze with?

MAA,
I have used MAPP gas successfully to heat seized bolts. It is much hotter than propane. Its in a yellow can at Home depot.

All,
FYI: Propane's heating value is 1,000 BTU/ cubic foot. That means that MAPP has a High Heating Value (HHV) of 2.4 times that of propane. SIGNIFIGANT!

This may be a stupid question so please bare with me.

Can you use a standard propane torch tip with MAPP gas? If so, I am golden since I have 2, but if not, what tip should I get?

Standard propane tips work fine. On another note, anyone out there have any experience with hydrogen torches?

95se5m,

My understanding of MAPP vs propane is that you CAN'T use a propane tip on MAPP. There are tips that can burn both for sale nowadays but the old propane tips frequently found on top of a blue bottle in someone's shop are not up to the hotter temps.

I have found that a turbo torch seems to burn hotter than a cheap $ 15 benzomatic from wal-mart or home depot they can usually be found at plumbing supply stores and they burn map gas as well I've seen people do silver solder with them which requires a hotter flame than regular solder
