Check Engine Light

I have a '96 Explorer with 75,000, CEL just came on. I had emissions tested for new tabs and the next day CEL came on. I don't really want to go to a dealer. Is thier a good diagnostic tester that I can by cheaply to diagnose problem. I have not notice any symptoms. Could my emmissions test have any thing to do with it. Any good brands for code tester? Can a novice operate one.

There may be others, but I know Harbor Freight sells an OBD-2 code reader for ~$50. It won't do anything more than pull trouble codes. You could get a scanner, but that will run you at least $150 and probably more. You might try a parts store. Some (Autozone in particular) will read trouble codes for free, and then tell you what part(s) you need to buy to make the code go away. I wouldn't buy anything based solely on the trouble code, but it would be a cheap way to get the trouble codes.
