I was wondering what other Aerostar owners think of the "fuel injection service /flushing" you see advertised at different shops? A friend was telling me those machines do more harm than good, because they force flush the pinpoint openings on older injectors. Then, you have the problem of rich idle conditions, sluggish performance, and fuel leakdown into the cylinders when the engine is shut off, this diluting the oil over time with gasoline. Any thoughts or ideas on this? Any tech experienced with using those machines in a shop, I would be interested in your opinion. Thank You.
I was wondering about that sort of thing myself. Then a friend told me about a trick that an old machanic had showed him. He said to empty a bottle of deisel fuel conditioner/cleaner into the tank. He tried this with some success, ( better fuel economy, performance, ect. I tried it on my '95 Aero 3.0 shortie and experienced a noticable increace in fuel economy. I used to get about 17 mpg in town, but now I get about 23-25 mpg in town! It cost me about $5.00 at Canadian Tire.
I use Lucas injector cleaner & notice that my aero (3.0) 'pings' less under hard low rpm acceleration. But, I still can't get above 18 mpg in the city. Does this stuff act like an octane booster? Also, is it safe to put diesel cleaner into a gas engine?
I'm not placing "deisel" in with the gas, but just deisel injector cleaner/conditioner. I've experienced no problem as of yet, but I don't think that I would do it on a regular basis. My friend has been doing this for about 2 years now on his '93 Tempo. His odometer just flipped 385,000 with no engine problems yet.
Regarding the fuel injection service, I've had it done and didn't notice any problems resulting from it. On the other hand, I didn't notice any improvement. A few months later, I removed the injectors myself and had them ultransonically cleaned. The guy who did it told me that prior to cleaning, one injector had a poor pattern, one had a good pattern and the others were fair. After the ultrasonic cleaning, they were all as good as new and the difference was noticeable. Knowing what I now know, I wouldn't waste my money on the injection service. However, getting the injectors out isn't exactly easy.
Regarding the diesel fuel, I've blended gas and diesel at about 5% diesel and not noticed any problems. There was a guy at the gas station who was putting some diesel in his Honda, and when asked if his car was really a diesel, he said he always top off his tank with a little diesel when he fills up his car. He had something like 280,000 miles on it and said his mechanic recommended it. It must not gel at low enough ratios. By the way, I used an octane booster once and when I read the contents, the only thing listed was kerosene, which is pretty darn close to diesel fuel.
