Truck in question is an 83 F150 inline 6. My idle is not smooth. It never has been. Dispite the fact that I rebuilt this non-feedback Carter 3 years ago. Generally the truck runs well, but now it's having symptoms of mild surging throughout the entire accelerator range. Only after reaching 120 Kms. (Canadian model) does it smooth out.
Ive had a look at the vacuum hoses and such and everything looks ok. As mentioned the carb was rebuilt, new plugs, wires, cap and rotor 25,000 klicks ago. Any ideas what I should look for to smooth my ride out?
So 83 had a feed back system as you said "I rebuilt this non-feedback Carter 3 years ago."
So what dist. you running, feed back or non-feedback?

Distributor is stock. The truck only has 47,000 original KM's on it. I'm second owner. After doing some reading here on the forum I'm now thinking perhaps coil breaking down, EGR, or cracked plug ceramic. It might point to EGR because when floored, or at a high rate of speed the surging isn't there.
Not just the egr, but the emissions system in general. Anything that runs off ported vacuum. I'd start by checking for leaks. Inspect vacuum lines and connections as well as the egr diaphragm. Do you have a vacuum tester/brake bleeder? Very handy tool and not very expensive.
If you suspect the EGR, take it off, make a blank gasket to block the holes off out of a pop can or something, and bolt it back together and see if the problem goes away.

And to add to that pull the vacuum line and plug it so if the EGR had a vacuum leak it would take that out of the picture also.
