1987 F-150 Starting Problem

Have a 1987 F-150 standard pickup with four wheel drive. I have replaced the starter relay and the solenoid. When I turn the key nothing happens; but if I put the key in the "run" position, I can start it by "jumping" the solenoid. What might be the problem?

Does your truck have a solinoid on the starter as well as on the fender? I have had problems with both in the past but your problem does sound different. Do you have a manual trans with safety switch on the clutch pedal? The saftey switch can go bad.
If the truck has an auto trans, there was a recall on some of the later 80's F-150's on the neutral saftey switch located on the trans linkage. The switch connected to the shifter linkage and plugged into a wire harness. Ford does have an updated switch, or at least they did when it happened to my 89'. Good luck.
