Reese goose box

Have a 18 f250 with 4” bds lift. Any one towing a 5th wheel with a goose box. Does it work? Will it work? Thanks.

I really like ours, little more concentration getting lined up, but I feel it's worth it. I have no hitch to install. I've never used a 5th wheel so can't compare. Tows well, 37' Grand design. I use bed space for various items when traveling. I have 8' bed, read most can use with a short as well, depending on trailer.

I have an adapter on my RV that converts to a gooseneck. My RV is about 15k and 35'. It is pretty heavy especially pin weight. I've put over 30,000kms on this setup over a 7 year period. It works great. I've never pulled a fifth wheel though so I can't compare. My other trailer is a gooseneck so having a gooseneck on my RV is way easier. Also way nicer when travelling not having that huge hitch in the bed. The goosebox even looks better than the adapter I have.

Does it work, will it work... yes. Reviews are good, especially on the 2nd generation. I'd be a bit concerned with your 4" lift tho - will likely be fairly nose high on the 5er. May also be limited on turn deg if a SB as well.

Whole heartily agree with this. I'm already nose high with a completely stock truck. If my truck had a 4" lift I don't think I'd be able to hook up the fiver. No way it's fitting under the nose at that height. Here's a couple of photos showing how the bed is already too tall for the nose. Now, imagine if the truck was an extra 4" higher!

And yes, that's not a Goosebox, just a standard fiver hitch. But I don't think the type of hitch makes a difference in this case.

Does anyone use the Goosebox with OEM puck system on standard bed or does it need to be long bed?

I towed a 5th wheel with the Goosebox for about 6 years. Our camper is gone now, but I would likely do a Goosebox again.

I also towed with a 4" lift...albeit on an 2012. I think the new trucks sit higher. I had to lift my camper for it to work.

My parents tow a 18,000# VanLeigh Beacon on a Goosebox, and they love it. No chucking, no noises from the hitch. They have an '18 F350 DRW with the OEM puck system. The also use the B&W OEM ball, so my dad can unhook and then have a completely empty bed two minutes later. And at 74 he never has to deal with a heavy 5th wheel hitch again.

Their trailer sits level and has about 6.5" clearance from the bed rails. I would be concerned about either level or clearance on my F350 SRW, which is taller than their truck, and a 4" lift would be even more concerning. 90LX306's trailer lift might be necessary.

Also, I hooked him up with an AirLift WirelessOne compressor to inflate and deflate the air bag in the Goose Box, which is pretty trick.

Check out Big Truck Big RV's YouTube videos on the goose box, he's got a bunch.

My 2008 RV is a challenge with these newer trucks. I can't lift the camper as it is already 13'6" tall and it is nose high when on the truck. I love the RV though and it fits my family perfectly. My flatbed trailer I had to sell as it would contact the bed when going in and out of fields. I bought a newer flatbed that had a taller gooseneck for more clearance. Lifting a truck negatively affects its towing properties and these new trucks are already pretty tall. I would think twice about lifting the truck if wanting to tow fifth wheel or gooseneck.

I tow a ~17k lbs 5er using the 20k Goose Box, 2019 F450, Jayco 377.

I was a bit of an early adopter, installing it about 2 years ago, so I have the first generation. It's been great. The airbag and shock design, along with the fifth wheel chassis manufacturer (Lippert) warranty approval, and the clear bed when not in use makes for an awesome combo. Rides very nicely. The Gen 1 air regulator would leak and bleed down on long tows, but Reese sent me the one from a Gen 2 at no charge and it has been holding air fine.

I use it with a B&W raised ball in the factory puck system, and it gives me 6" of bed rail clearance and 5.5" of tailgate clearance. A little tighter than I like, and a ball a half-inch shorter would allow me to raise the pin box to its highest setting and gain a half inch more clearance. Unfortunately, I haven't found a puck type ball that height and raising the pin box without going lower on the ball would put my overall height above legal towing limit.

The biggest concern is the height of the box where it bolts up, it needs to arc downwards to reach the bed, so there is a lot of mass that sits right in line with the bed rail height. So far, I only had once incident hitting the plastic siderail caps at a 90 degree turn while the truck had one side on a curb. No sure any pin box would have cleared in that case, though. Either way, keep an eye on that.

Didn’t know anyone made a “long bed” since International Harvester quit making pickups!! Their long bed was 9 ft, everyone else just had the standard 8 ft, along with the 6 1/2 or 6 3/4 ft short bed.

Depends on who you ask. I've also seen plenty of references to the 6 3/4' bed being the Standard Bed and the 8' bed being the Long Bed. I tend to think of it as the "Can pretend it fits in parking spots" box (SB) and the "Nope, can't pretend, you're officially stuck in the boondocks when parking." (LB)

Yes I've tpuched the plastic caps on the bed rails on my previous Ram with the pin box. I haven't touched on my 2019 F450 yet but I moved the pin box one set of holes as it was way too close to the bed rails. The gooseneck setup allows for a lot of articulation. You just have to pay attention on off camber type turns.

FWIW, Ford offered a 9' bed through at least the end of the 5th Generation F-Series
