STEERING U-JOINT REPLACEMENT 2012 E150

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to get some information on how to replace the steering u-jont assembly on my 2012 E-150, 5.4 V8. I can feel it knuckling back and forth especially when I make turns and go over curbs
I had it replaced at 65000 miles under warranty from the dealer, but now I am at 97000+ and they want to charge me a fortune to do it.
I can find videos on F150s but not on an E150. And the part looks different on a truck rather than my van.
Do any of you have any information or procedures on how to change this? And what the part is actually called?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I've completely removed several steering columns from both F-Series and E-Series---basically the same arrangement for both, relatively simple. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait about 15 minutes before removing the lower dash trim panels, disconnect the column's electrical connectors leading to the Multi Function Switch, air bags, Vehicle Speed Control (if so equipped)--when it comes to the actual sliding ignition switch I simply remove it with wiring harness still connected--two Torx drive bolts holding it to the column superstructure.

Find and release the gear position indicator's small cable and unhook it from the shift lever.

There should be 4 15mm nuts holding the column to the dash board interior bracing and the column can be lowered so it temporarily rests on the seat. Loosen the bolts holding the universal joint, using a small pry bar gently spread the "jaws" of the joint so it will slip off the shaft running to the steering box. From here you can remove the entire column intact and work on removing the universal joint from the column.

Do notice there is a notch of sorts in both halves of the steering shafts where the clamp bolts for the u-joint slide into---this is a safety feature of sorts.

If you're able to completely immobilize the steering wheel position as well as the tires on the ground you shouldn't have any issues with steering wheel being in the same orientation as before.
The part is technically an intermediate steering shaft, possible part numbers being 1C2Z3E751AA, or 6C2Z3E751AA---according to RockAuto anyway. They list that part @ $129 for a Dorman replacement but check with your local dealer for correct information and pricing. I'd also recommend a Ford part, new if possible through eBay or Amazon maybe.

Here's way too many photos of the steering column as I was removing and rebuilding one---use whatever image there that's helpful: Steering Column Images

Hope this helps---post any other questions you might have.
