To add to that, my mildly built 351w gets the same or slightly better gas mileage than the stock 302 that originally came in my truck (and that 302 was healthy) with the 351 have quite a bit more power and torque. I recommend staying away from the 302 for those reasons, it’s a dog.
That's a loaded question and sure to draw a lot of different opinions, but if you are asking me, and I'm assuming we're talking gas engines, best to worst I'd say- 5.8L, 7.5L, 4.9L, 5.0L. My opinion is for the most part based on power/torque to fuel economy ratio. I don't think any of them are really a bad choice.
I have a 5.0 in my 95 f150. 2wd reg cab.
It has been very reliable with minimal issues but it isn't overloaded with power hooked up to the 4 spd automatic. I get a pretty consistent 14mpg. I have hit 16 a time or two but only when driving a lot of highway.I had a 94 with 4.9 inline 6 5 spd and that was far more of a dog than this 5.0. Wasn't so bad in town but horrible on the highway. I owned a few carbed 300's and they were the same way. They have no nuts at higher rpms. Great on the low end.
A friend used to have 7.5's in most of his trucks, always seemed dependable. And he claimed got 10mpg no matter how you drove it. Plenty of power.
As far as gas mileage, I don't think any of the engine options in these trucks will be impressive.
I don't know why Ford never made a 4cyl turbo diesel for f150 trucks. I guess they didn't want to put Chevy totally out of business. Lol
I have a 4.9 with a 4 speed with at least 220k miles. I get about 15 MPG mainly surface roads but no stop and go and a little bit of hwy driving. It's not a race car but I have no problme keeping up in Atlanta traffic.
My 5.0L has a little over 160,000 miles on it and it runs well. It doesn't get the greatest gas mileage and it won't pull a house down, but it always starts up and it has no problems lugging around an 8 foot bed full of mulch or lumber or whatever.
The 5.0 liters are good running, reliable engines, they just aren't exactly powerhouses or torque monsters.
I had a 74 with the 5.0 and it never failed to get the job done. I just didn't like how I felt like I was flogging it to death when hauling heavy loads. 5.8 gets my vote for "best engine". 4.9 very close second.
Thanks everyone I have intentions of talking to a guy tomorrow about buying a parts truck but it is a 2 wheel drive and mine is a 4x4 will I have any problems ? I only want the motor from the 2 wheel and maybe interior parts I want to keep the manual trans i have so the rest of the truck will sit until I need another part
