Question Engine:Tran Alignment

Hi All
This is my first time installing a rebuilt 4.0L engine in my 1991 Explorer (2WD/Auto). I have done other engines before but on earlier models.

The engine is in but there seems to be resistance on the last 1/4" or so. I have started to tighten the bolts up to see if that would pull it in but as soon as I feel resistance I backed off. Tried "man handling" the engine but nothing seems to work. Could the torque converter have slipped forward out?

Any other tips appreciated as well.

Could be that but would think you would have noticed it. You should be able to look at it and tell. How about the converter not fitting into the crank.

Convertor to Crank

Maybe but I would have thought all connections would have been adequately started and aligned or I would not have been able to get to the alignment dowels started. Would I? As I noted, I was able to get all to slip on to within 1/4 to 1/2" of closing.

Well,I don't know. I just thought I'd throw that out there. If you get under and look, and find that your converter is against the flex plate then I would say that the conv is the problem. If ther is a gap between the conv and the flex plate then I would guess the conv is not fitting into the crank. It only goes in far enough to support it. (about 1/2') If you have it onto the pins then I would think it would go from ther unless it hit something. I'm sure you know but, they have to be in line pretty straight too but, I don't think that is the problem.

Money, it's almost certain your torque converter isn't seated. Don't try to pull it up with the bolts; you'll destroy the pump. You'll have to pull the engine out enough to spin the TC by hand, and "jiggle" it until it fully seats. Turn it in the same direction that the engine rotates. You'll be able to feel it when it fully seats.

Thumbs up Alignment

Yep. It's in! Jiggling the convertor did the trick.
Thanks to all.
