7.3 weird noises

Hello everyone still fighting a vibration in my 7.3. At idle, I notice a minor vibration and noise. I recently replaced the water pump and belt all through ford. it was leaking. For 2k it was quiet. When I apply more force to the tensioner the noise goes away. I noticed I have play in the fan clutch but it appears to not wobble. Is this normal? I could swear that they all had some play. Don’t want to send my fan through the radiator.

Is your tensioner shot? I replaced mine last Fall huge difference. Where is the play? Is the clutch tight? IIRC there’s 4 bolts that hold the fan on the clutch, are those tight?

Play seems to be in the fan clutch

Help!!!!!

I replaced the fan clutch, both idlers, tensioner and lower alternator. New water pump and belt in July. All motorcraft parts. Very small amount of play in new fan clutch and water pump. I remove belt quiet as a lark. I hold the tensioner with a bar while running and relax it slightly quiet as a lark. I am at a loss!

The fan blades themselves are not damaged at all? Fan shroud is good shape and clipped in at the bottom?

Are you sure the shroud is clipped in the bottom? If it didn’t seat or came out that could definitely cause a vibration and noise.

Damn, I’m at a loss. When you say you took the belt off and it’s quiet you mean with the truck running? What about the fan belt itself? Just thinking out loud...

Ya I am too. I take the belt off and start the truck it’s quiet. I have a friend start the truck when I have my tensioner tool on the tensioner it’s quiet. I apply minimal pressure to the tensioner and release it ever so slightly it’s quiet. I’m about ready to trade it in.

Belt slap

I am going to try another motorcraft water pump. This one has a tiny bit of play. I hope that works. If not maybe the shorter belt? Looks like I got slop in between the alternator and crank pulley. I am using the jk81831 currently which is supposed to be correct. Any body else here have the same problem

Have you replaced the belt recently? Since everything else is new, I would try a new belt before trying a new water pump, just because it’s less work.

I did in July. I used a motorcraft jk81381. I switched it out with the original ford belt yesterday but it’s still noisy. I am curious about 2 things: is it normal to feel slight side to side play from the water pump when rocking the fan blade side to side? And ford has a shorter belt which was used in a ssm for belt squeel. I wonder if I should try it? But it was for 2002 trucks.
