I traced the play to the steering shaft that runs from the firewall to the steering box.
At the top of the shaft is a universal joint and then the bottom bolts onto the steering box. A few inchs above the bottom looks like theirs some type of joint there that's all loose. That's where the play is.
Anyone know what I'm talking about?
What's the technical name for this steering shaft?
For a quick fix I could probably stick something in there to tighten it up.
Otherwise can I go to a wrecker and pick up a used one?
Is this a common problem?
Is their a plastic bushing that could be worn out in there?
The shaft that you are talking about is called the intermediate shaft. If the truck has a splash shield you will have to remove it to tighten up the coupling. When you tighten up the coupling make sure that it is on the steering gear right. It may have a flat on the coupling and on the steering gear input shaft. Hopefully the coupling and steering gear are not all stripped up. That could cost some time and money to fix. If all you have to do is tighten up the coupling (One bolt I believe) and the pieces are in good shape, you should'nt need to get anything. As far as a plastic bushing I don't believe there is one there. Once you get it tightened up 25 to 34 ft. lbs. of torque, you may need to adjust the steering gear. Good luck iron eddie
