Anyone Had This Problem?

For about a month my 88 4x4 `s starter was hanging up until I tapped on the silonoid then it would run great until next time I started it.Then one day I cut it off next morning it would not crank. After replacing several parts,I took some advice from another forum on this site and figured out it was the ignition modual.Ever since then my starter has not hung -up once.Go figure. I guess you learn something every day.Just trying to give helpful advice like I got.herothc

Can you explain? This doesn't really make sense. Normally, the ignition module has nothing at all to do with the starter or solenoid. I've had your problem many times, and it's ultra common on those GM starters. Normally, the solenoid is at fault.
I've had this problem on nearly every GM car I've owned at one time or the other. Usually, when this happens, the first sign is not starting when the engine is hot. Won't click, won't do nada. The trigger is Murphy related. It will almost always first crap out in the worst place you can imagine. Usually at the store while you run in for 4 min to grab something, and you come back to a dead starter. When you let it cool off, it will start right up.
Then after a while whacking with a stick is required, or can hasten the starting process. Eventually they get so bad, they don't start at all, unless you get lucky and whack them in the right place. If you changed the starter and or solenoid, you shouldn't have any more trouble. For the life of me, I can't see how the ignition module has any relation to the starter and solenoid. Am I missing something here?

Just thinking....Did you mean the ignition switch? That could cause hanging if it sticks on "start" . The problem I described earlier usually does not "hang". Just no workee. MK

I admit it does`nt sound right but that is what happened. The starter started hanging-up just for a second or two at first but gradually got worse. It would continue to turn(bendix engaged) until I tapped on the starter silonoid.I just thought that when it stopped hanging after I changed the ignition modual that it was the problem. It`s been 2 months ,no more starting problems. Please respond, thanks, herothc

I guess we'll have to take your word on that. VERY strange. Never heard that one before. I can't even think of a reason why that would happen, unless somehow it backfed all the way to the start circuit. I don't know if that's possible. Stanger thing have happened though.
