New Cab Corner Question

I recently purchased and installed new front cab corners on my '55. What is the purpose of having the triangular opening as circled in the attached picture? Is it there to secure something during the assembly? If so, that doesn't make sense to me, as I need to cover that over and prime everything prior to assembly. What am I missing?

Those are patterned after the '56 model which had an inspection plate there. I made covers and gaskets for mine ('54). Not really a big deal. Good luck, Steve

Steve,
So is it better to leave it as an inspection port rather than weld it shut?

I guess it depends on how far along you are with metal work. For me the inspection hole cover plate was a quick solution but really there would be no reason it couldn't be welded shut. I got my truck on the road in 2012 and I have never had to remove the inspection cover for anything. Good luck which ever way you decide to go. Steve

That is more than a decoration...the reason that you had to replace your cab corners is largely due to crap building up in the recesses and holding water/moisture. Those openings give you access to those recesses so that the buildup can be flushed out before it causes corrosion problems. Most of us who have worked on our trucks and replaced panels have spent some time and effort in painting the inner surfaces as we go...unfortunately this was a time/effort consuming process that had little return on investment when these trucks were on the factory floor.
