Got my New 2019 Super Duty to replace the 2015 that I got T-Boned and Totaled! This one has the 2 1/2" Hitch old one had the 2" So I of course picked up the adapter for NOW! BUT, as I went to hook the chains up on my Boat the Hooks were to SMALL! Then I couldn't connect up the UTILITY Trailer! But MY big Concern is When I adjust the Hitch for the Travel Trailer, I know the Hooks for the Chains will not work! WHAT HAVE YOU ALL DONE!!! Thank You for the statements and were and what's!!!
OK, HAHA Just went past Northern Tools in Duluth MN. on the way back from Canada. Wish I had know that then! So what Size did you guys use to Fit and Hang Properly. I know I will be measuring it! and Figure it out! But That is Great! I had Stoped at Rural King by My parents house They may of even had them But! I was just looking at the Hooks and such!
I bought these off of amazon, 3/4" shackle, seems to be the normal addition to the oem hitch to fit all the safety-chain hooks, you can probably go one smaller to fit smaller hooks.
I pull a trailer almost daily for about 6 months out of the year and they work great.
I can't remember if I got them at Northern Tool or elsewhere, but I have these hooks on the trailer safety chain: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/to...8525_200658525
I bought a stretch coiled cable for the breakaway switch and hook it through the hole in the pin of the safety chain shackle.
A 5/8" shackle is what you need. 3/4" shackles are too big.
This is a good setup: Chains are crossed, hook opening facing in and to the rear. This is a proper hitch up, if you are NOT doing it this way you are doing it wrong. The only thing I would add to. this set up is the screw in pins in the shackles should be safety wired [either by wire or you can use nylon ties]. I use the nylon ties and pull them tight so as to not get pinched. You can also fold some threads on the screw in pin which makes it difficult to screw in/out, if you do it right it will provide enough resistance so as it will not work it way out or unscrew.
Down to 3 trailers from 5 [US Army issue, Tractor Supply, Big Tex, Northern Tool, Costco]. All of them had chains and all my chains fit my OEM 3 in hitch assembly. Would like to see some pics of chain hooks that don't fit, I have never had a problem.
I am amazed at some of the lash ups I have seen over the years.

I believe the issue is with the 2-1/2" receivers. I've pulled 4 different trailers and never had a problem hooking up to my 3" receiver once I learned the trick. You turn the hook sideways and insert from below so it fits through the bottom slot, then you rotate so the tip comes through the rear opening and tip it vertically so the latch can engage. Easy once someone shows you...

The pins are tightened down with a pair of pliers. It would take a lot of force to get them out.
