Angry engine swap

I have an 82 f250 that I took a 300 six out of. I am trying to put a 302 in its place. The 302 is a 70's model. I am having a problem with a noise in the bell housing. I first thought that it was clutch fork off the clip in the tranny but later found out that it was still on the clip. I noticed that the 300 had a bearing in the back of the crank. The 302 does not. Is this an item that is needed to eliminate that knocking noise in the bell housing? Thanks for any advice

yes it is pilot bearing for the input shaft of the tranny. very much needed.. the engine probably has an automatic tranny which does not have that bearing..

The engine is out of a standard shift truck. I the 70's they used a brass bushing up inside the crank I believe? This is a bearing in the end of the crank on the 300. Is there a difference in the length of the input shaft? I'll try the bearing and see how it works. Thanks for the help.

Pilot bearing and bushing are interchangable. The input shaft is the same for both.

Would anyone have any idea of the noise in the bell housing? It sounds a lot like the clutch fork is just bumping around in there.

the noise is probably from the input shaft hitting the crank if theres no bearing there to keep it spinning true..

I have tried both the 300 and the 302 starters and the noise is the same. When the engine is first installed there is no noise after the engine rolls over a few times the noise comes back and gets continually loader till you here the knocking. the first ime the fork came off the pivot this time it is still on the pivot.
The preasure plates of the 302 and 300 are different. The 302 has 3 large tines and the 300 has many smaller ones where the throw out bearing rides. Could this cause a problem?

Ok just fior others info. I have found that the 70's 302 clutch plate is 1/2" wider than the 82 300 plate. I am going to try tapping new holes in the 302 flywheel for the 300 clutch plate or change the bell housing. The clutch fork on the 70's rides on a ball in the back of the bell housing. The fork on the 80's rides on a bracket and the ball is in the back of the fork. I will have to measure the distance of the mechanisum that the fork rides on to the front end of the bell housing first. Then I will be able to better decide which one to tackel. I will reply later with my findings. Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Thanks

I think I would try to keep the year of all the parts the same. If you are having trouble with a 70 clutch in an 82 bellhousing, then try an 82 clutch in the 82 bell. Or I think you already mentioned maybe putting the 70 bell on, keeping the other 1970 parts. And I believe youmay need to check the clutch sizes. I am not up on this too much, but there may have been a 10.5" clutch, and then a 11" clutch. Maybe you are trying to put an 11" clutch in a bell that was designed for a smaller clutch. This is a guess. Keep it all the same year, and I bet you get it working.

The difference in size that I mentioned was actually in the depth from the flywheel to the back of the preasure plate. There are different clutches 10.5" and 11". I think I am going to change the bell housing. Seems simpler than trying to tap new holes in the flywheel. Thanks for the advice.
