I replaced mine at 160,000 and 180,000 on two different trucks. They were probably getting worn by 150k but not bad enough. My 99 had a check on the front end at 150,000. The steering box was adjusted. One tire got a bubble at about 180k and I started checking the ball joints were worn by that time.
On the other ruck it was only one that was worn but I figured they probably wont last much longer. I rebuilt both front ends hub to hub. Whoever buys my 99 3/4 ton is gonna have 100k before it needs new ball joints or front end work.

Finally after a month I was able to take it to a professional shop and get it on a lift. We found everything tight. That is ball joints, tie rods, hub bearings. The steering shaft with the pitman arm went up and down a bit more then one would expect and is starting to leak. "Some" play in the box but I did adjusted it a 1/4 turn a while ago but came home today and did another 1/8th turn. Munch much better. We did forget to check the universal on the steering shaft.
So it looks like I'll be looking for a blue top box. I like brian42 experience with one. They are out of stock now but probably going to wait for now anyway that the box is tolerable to drive. Had a vibration that was driving me nuts and sounded like it was coming from the passenger side. At take off and certain speeds it would vibrate like a hum. Turned out to be someone replaced the transmission and it has a yellow stripe across the bell housing so I suppose it's a bone yard tranny. Anyway the plate under the transfer case was on backwards the short side was to the driver side and it was rubbing on the bottom of the case. The bolts on the driver side were ready to fall out so I removed it and the vibration is gone.
