I have found a 78 f250 4x4 for sale. I have only seen one pic from the side but the guy claims it has a front Dana 60. The kicker is I can see a coil spring in the pic. From what I’ve found it’s most likely a f150 that someone put a 60 in. I have my doubts of it even being a 60. It’s 1.5 hrs away. He won’t send any pics. I was wanting a parts truck for that axle and steering components. He kept telling me it’s factory but I do t know if he knows. Now let’s say it is a 60. Would it have a spring perch cast into the pumpkin so I could put it in my 76 with leafs? I have no problems with cutting and welding
They never made a front coil F250 73-79 4x4 of any kind . probably an F150 is what you're looking at. or possibly a later super duty conversion of some kind.
And in any event you need a low pinion so that's a whole other can of worms.
You have the best set up as it is anyway, a low pinion disc brake open knuckle high boy, 76 and early '77 only. I wouldn't mess with it.
78 F250 4wd should have leaf spring front suspension and the axle has welded on leaf spring perches. F250 4wd can have a (more common) D44 or a D60 front axle. (our year truck) D44 has ball joints, (our year) D60 has king pins. Newer D60 (95 (?) and has ball joints). If you see front coil springs and or radius arm front suspension, then it is more than likely a F150 and has a D44 front axle.
I have never seen a front axle D60 in a F150. Yes you would have to modify a D60 axle to go under a F150 and work with coil spring radius arm suspension.
Yes a 150 4wd Super cab has leaf spring front suspension. But I believe came with a common D44 front axle. In the technologically easy world we live in sending a pic is as easy as click and send, via text message. So the seller must not want to sale it very bad. Or is just trying to use the "Its a D60 axle" hype to make the deal.
I remember seeing that one on the Next Tech classifieds. The 35...caught my attention at 1st, then I figured 3500 and hit next. Yes it looks like a 8 lug hub with NO lock in/lock out, and yes I see a coil spring and what looks like a radius arm or a newer axle (SD) lower link?
Like I said, how hard is it to snap another pic and send it, not that hard. You know that finding a 78/79 parts truck with a D44 front axle and all the parts to make your 76 the newer style steering, will probably be WAY easier to find. Just saying, because people are finding out what a 78/79 Dana 60 is worth now days. Good ol internet.
I think it's a better chance that someone had a 60 truck and converted it to coil spring....(if it's really a 60 which you can't tell from that picture)
Me personally, I only like to buy from ppl who want to sell.
In a 15 year span I looked at/under probably at least 10 ----- '79 F350 4x4 that seller either claimed/thought had D60 front (which they all would have originally). Every one of these had at some point had the D60 robbed and replaced with an HD44. I did finally come across one still intact - and hauled it home.
Did all 79 f350 4x4s come factory with a front d60? I found a 79 f350 custom with 400 engine and auto tranny. Have not set my eyes on it in person yet. Don’t know if anyone could tell by lockout in this pic

1979 F350 4WD's have Dana 60's front and rear, dual piston caliper front brakes with 12" x 2 1/2" rear drum brakes.
1973/78 F350's, 1979 F350 2WD's have a Dana 70 rear axle, dual piston caliper front disc brakes, 12" x 3" rear drum brakes.
Looking closely at that pic I believe it does have a dana 60 but it has a 2005 and up super 60. The pic shows the gray factory manual over vacuum hub that is held in with 3 countersunk screws and one of those is visible in that pic. This axle is 8x170 not 8x6.5 unless it’s been redrilled (does look to have newer factory wheels). 2005 and up f350 and f350 trucks are coil spring.

This, exactly.
It is, in fact, an 05-up Dana 60 (and front suspension) in a 1973-1979 pickup.
Bummer. Guy says he owned it last 12 years and bought from local fire dept. hopefully get some more pics before I drive 300 miles one way. He’s got it priced right so I don’t know if it matters all that much to me
