Hey all. Thanks in advance for any info. My husband and I are very attached to our 1994 e150 van, it’s pushing 250000 miles. Recently it’s been having issues and after taking it to every mechanic in town and finally the ford dealership we were told the van has some valves that cannot he replaced do to being obsolete. We are considering putting a new engine in the van. Anyone have any idea of what a replacement would cost assuming we put in a duplicate of the original engine?
Somewhere near 6k with labor and a Ford reman engine.
That sounds 'bout right---I just did this with a Ford reman'd 5.4. I went a bit overboard to assure reliability and to keep the Ford warranty intact so I replaced the intake manifold and all 8 injectors plus cleaned the snot out of the throttle body. I have a slight advantage of discounted Ford parts through a local dealer and access to a lot of talented, skilled and trustworthy mechanics who'll work under the table for cash money. There are upsides and downsides to that arrangement so its not for everyone.
You don't mention what engine is in your E150 so its tough to say what costs you'll have. If the engine is having issues we have to wonder if the transmission is in good working order. What's its maintenance schedule been over your ownership?
When replacing something as involved as the entire engine on that year van there will certainly be other parts needing replaced too. It wouldn't be a stretch to budget up to $8k for everything by the time the project is finished. This assumes you'll use Ford or equal quality parts.
Isn't '94 still 351w 302? The 6 cylinder would be the only one I'd think would have obsolete valves.
Those are the only three engines offered in the E150 that year. Most likely a 302 or 351. Reman long block runs about 2 grand. can't say about labor cost, not knowing where she's at. It's at least a two day job.

I too am curious what engine you have. My 1995 E150 with the 5.0L is just past 295k miles and the engine is fine other than oil leaks. I am dealing with major rust issues and like you am very attached to this truck. It's been through a lot with me over the nine years I have owned him and can not let go.
Thanks for your responses everyone! I was just digging around in the van and found an old mechanic receipt, apperantly we need a diverter valve and solenoid. I’m trying to locate what engine is in the van and will update again shortly. Anyone have thoughts on how to come by the obsolete valve? The ford dealership said d they exhausted their resources for finding one
That is part of the smog system which is external to the engine and should not be too hard to change, access will be easy with the doghouse removed but there may be rust to deal with which could result in other parts being required.
We’ve had A TON of work on the van recently and no rust issues were mentioned plus several parts already updated. Heres the issue, the dealership told us that we need valves that are obselete and there’s nothing else they could do.
That isn't an actual engine part. Its a smog part or coolant part. Maybe numberdummy can help but I'm not sure exactly what part your needing. What symptoms did you take it to the mechanics for? What is this diverter causing your van to do?
