clunk , clunk boom

buddies 80 something ranger does this really bizzar thing. when you go to start it . it spins over about 10 times and it sounds like it just ran out of gas then(kinda a clunk sound) boom (back fire i guess) and it starts. it runs fine after start . this bizzar event only happens when the engine is cold. thanks for any info

its one of the 4bangers (2.3l or 2.9L)and the fuel pressure i have know idea. after its starts running it runs fine

I'm thinking the check valve is not working and the fuel is draining out of the rail, see if cycling the key a few times beffore he starts it helps.
