As a ford performance enthusiast, I am a little let by down by the oval. I went today to talk to the dealer and about ordering my new 04. Trading in my 03
Turns out that Ford decided that those of us that like the extended cabs and the affordability of the Xlt and the sportiness of a 2x4 are:-x09 .
Why must the oval punish us? I wanna get mine with a 5.4 they only offer 4.6's. WHY is it really that hard to put a 5.4 in the 2x4's oh i understand those 4x4's need all that horse for all that extra weight right. I just wanna----SMOKEM'
I've got about 1,000 miles on my beautiful f150 4x2 Supercab XLT with the 5.4. You might want to see another dealer. When I got to my dealer they had 4 04s. All with the XLT 5.4L 4x2 configuration. When I left they had 3.
You are right to want to get the 5.4 IMO. I luv the power and have not had a hint of any strain or noise on acceleration.
It seems that the computer chips won't let you spin the tires (optional Michelin P255/65R17 @ $325) but it will press you back into the drivers' seat real nicely.
Best news is that the EPA mileage for the 5.4L is exactly the same as the smaller version. 15-19.
Last time I filled-up I got 16.7 mpg from 700 to 950 miles on the truck. I live in a small town and make a lot of short trips with an occasional 20 miles on the highway.
Good luck. It's worth checking out.

p.s. My dealer would probably tell you that the 04 4x2 XLT is only available with the 5,4L at this time. They have them in red, white and black. I took the Dark Shadow Gray.
Well, i did finally get a hold of a dealer book and yes, indeed i can get my 2x4 5.4, seems the chick i was talking to the other day didn't know hers from a hole in the ground. What's this with it not letting you unleash the fury on the baloney skins? I need to burn tires..... that's why i get the 5.4, oh and that trailer towing thingy too. why do they prevent me from......Smokenem'
You're going to have a good time now that you found the right configurations. I have trailer tow, and at $350, think it is well worth it. Even if I don't tow, the oil cooler, HD radiator and 72 amp. battery will make driving in Texas summers easier on me and the truck!
I read on some thread in FTE that the throttle chip may limit acceleration during the first 300 miles, or so. That may be my experience that I told you about. Also, I really didn't punch the wire to the metal on a truck with a hundred miles on it that I'm thinkin' about buying. Plenty of time for that later.
If you can, I recommend the Michelin tire upgrade. At $325 they are cheaper than from a tire dealer. They are traction A/temp B/treadwear 440. I've found them to be really sticky in a couple of pretty good showers that we've had. Have fun and let us know what you think.
