check the timing out of time it wont fire on proper stroke. spark dont help when the valves are closed. bad timing chain or something like above can do this or just a dist thats got moved.
Since it is trying to start do this... Pull the distributor cap, have someone crank over the engine. Note which direction the rotor is turning. Loosen the distributor and turn it appx 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches the OPPOSITE direction the rotor was turning.
If the engine either starts or comes much closer to starting, the timing chain has jumped a tooth on the fiber timing gear.
Do Not attempt to drive it if it does start up after this. Change the timing set then. If you try to drive it a few days until you get time to change the timing gears, one or two things will happen. 1 the gear will wear more and jump another tooth, causing the timing to need advancing more, 2 the ground up fiber from the timing gear will clog up the oil pickup screen, resulting in ruined rod and main bearings and a scored up crank. You can guess as to how I know this....I was young once, and thought I could put the timing gear change off for a week.....
Well, here I went and replied to a thread the OP has posted in since 9-22-19....Oh well.
