Has anyone here actually done this? I'm wanting to figure out how to run the cable to bottom of the mirror and still allow the mirror to fold. I cant find much info on this at all.
I am also interested, my research has shown that adding oem cams to a truck with only a tailgate cam(like my lariat value) is very expensive and difficult if even possible. I am still seriously considering the Rostra kit that quite a few people have recommended, though there is not many write ups, at least that I could find. But it does seem pretty close to plug and play.
Yes I was thinking of that kit as well. I like the way you can access it through sync and not by pressing the steering wheel buttons. I found this link and saw the cameras mounted. Looking for a write up to do that. I would use 170 degree cameras to see the front as well.
I wonder what system the guy in that video used? I think the Rostra interface will allow the cams to be activated with the turn signals, and I heard him hit the turn signal to change the view to the other side, but the factory cams do that as well, I found a thread that had some camera reviews for the mirrors when I was searching, but I can’t find it now, it was buried in a thread somewhere, I think it was this forum though. I think some are stuck in with double sided tape, and others use a bolt to attach them.
The Rostra allows for I think 3 or 4 cameras to be installed, plus the factory tailgate cam, but I don’t think it can combine the image to give any sort of birdseye view like the factory system. What do you mean by being able to see the front with 170’ camera? Like a fisheye lens kind of camera?

I can add a bit to this.
The company that released that video is about the best in the country as far as retail aftermarket installs goes. They have been named the #1 Aftermarket Retailer in the country again this year. Also the owner Brian Layton is one of the judges at SEMA for Mobile Electronics product awards. This guy knows his stuff. Their review of a product is huge in the industry. I called and yes it is the Rostra piece.
The Rostra piece does activate automatically with the turn signals, but to access the front camera or cargo camera you do need to push the talk button on the steering wheel to access the menu. If you have your iPhone connected when you do this it prompts siri, but I just say "Cancel" and she goes away.
The cameras used on the mirrors are the Rostra 250-8160-BSC. They are really small cameras made out of a rubber material that sticks to the surface with 3M trim tape. This is the same stuff that holds on the Ford Logo's. You have to make sure that where you are going to stick it is clean and prep'ed correctly. Once it is they are not going anywhere. 3M makes a surface activator that doubles the strength of the adhesive on the tape.
I added the module and one of these cameras for a front camera system in my truck. It works great. I don't use it a lot but when I do need it I love it.
And no it will not supply a 360 view since there really is no way to knit all the pictures together.
I put one in a buddies truck as a 5th wheel camera, he needed the extra view to see the hitch connection, again it worked great. Easy plug and play at the back of the radio. No cutting or splicing. It even has power out for the camera power. You can view it while driving too.
I have seen these cameras mounted under the mirror on the hinge next to the door not actually on the mirror arm itself but I personally have not done this or pulled one apart yet. I have read a couple of writeups where people have pulled out the glass to replace marker lights and such and it seems like it can be done.
I think I would start by removing the mirror from the door and looking at it on the bench. There are only 3 bolts holding it on. Pull the small corner trim cover at the door panel and door panel to get access to bolts and wire harness and that should get you there.
You then need to bring the camera wire into the vehicle through the door channel so you would need to be inside the door anyhow to get that routed correctly.
It's a big job but that's why companies like SoundFX makes good money doing it, most people just don't want to mess with it.
I added everything to my cart on amazon, but I just can’t get myself to pull the trigger, it totals about $550, Rostra side cams, the interface, and a cam for the grill that had good reviews, my issue is I mainly want the front cam, and it seems to be the least intuitive of the 3, as in having to push the call button, then cancel Siri, then I’m assuming it pops up a screen to choose which camera.. no doubt the blind spot cams would be nice, but my main use would have been 360 view so I don’t run over a kids bike or kid for that matter. I don’t know, I’m probably still going to buy it, I guess it will allow for an hdmi input to the factory screen so I can watch movies while driving, just kidding, but I put a bench seat in the front, so my son could watch something in the front while the twins watch barbies in the back. The other option would be to add the $100ish Rostra front parking sensors, Im great at parking this giant truck, but the wife needs a little extra help... that’s my excuse anyway.
Man keep us updated! I just need to see the sides of my truck in tight quarters. Sometime I think I’m close to something in the front and I’m still 4 feet away. I’m thinking about the front camera only but if I’m in there and I can get those side cams in clean then why not.
