a while ago I saw them use a padded grinding disk for body/metal work on TrucksTV, I have looked all over but still can't find one. Could someone tell me weather or not you can buy these things and if so where?
I didn't catch that episode. Can you elaborate on the disc ? The company I work for specializes in cutting tools & abrasives for the mfg. sector & I've no clue what you're asking for.
it is a just like a regular angle grinding disk used for grinding off welds etc. but it had a layer of foam padding behind the abrasive so you will not gouge the metal.
I've never seen anything like that. All of our discs mount on a back-up pad. The back-up pad can be made of any number of different materials. Some are quite soft others very hard/stiff.
Depending on the material being ground, & finish desired which back-up pad you would use.
JJ,
My DA (offset orbital sander) has quite a soft pad. Could this guy have been using a DA pad? I've seen grits as rough as 36 used on a DA.
KingFisher
It's possible. We have a few different mfg's. that make different pads to fit almost anything out there. Anything from a soft foam, fiberglass, rubber, urethane, and combinations of materials.
We sell sanding discs w/ PSA backing from .375" dia. up to 36"dia.
the coarsest is around 16X the finest 0.05 micron (50,000x).
I am not trying to sell anything here. If we can determine the product that you or anybody else is looking for I will also try to find someone in your area that sells the product.
no this product was on an angle grinder not a DA and was abrasive enough to grind the welds down flush with sheet metal. It was specificaly stated that there was a layer of padding sandwiched in the disk. I am almos 99% sure of this.
could it have been a flap disk ??? made like a grinding disk but made from overlapping sheets of abrasive paper... an 80 grit disk will grind down welds to a polished finish... couldn't live with mine...keep one grinder loaded with a wheel and the other with the flap disk... great for finish work
several mfgs make them... do a search on flap disc... not to be confused with flap wheels which have a cylinder of abrasive paper...
well from what i have seen of his fabrications on trucks tv he is a hack and tends to scab alot of things together. but i dont want to get into that. i use my angle grinder everyday at work it is great for grinding on body panels and such. i use a 3 inch rol- lock backing pad with 50 grit roll locks. and for the finish touch i use the red scotch brite roll lock pads. when i was hanging bodies for johnny benson thats what i used to grind my welds down on my panels and fenders, ect 3m makes it and a company makes it called klingspor they are out of hickory nc
yep those are called tiger wheels sand discs they come already on a backer and work great(will take alot of metal off in a hurry tho) goto a weld supply shop they will know what yer looking for
