What exactly is the purpose of this hose? Comes out of the back of the throttle body unit and connects to the air intake plenum. I guess I've never noticed this before.

I think that's the air supply for the IAC valve.
At idle the throttle body is completely closed so air to run the engine is metered thru the IAC valve.
