I can’t really give you an answer on that, since I noticed mine like that right after I bought it. I can tell you that I couldn’t visually see any black soot coming out of mine when I was romping on it at first, as well as when I was towing 8k lbs for several hours the day after I bought it.

Yup...looks like the ceramic filter is cracked on yours as it was mine. I would tell them that this was a pre-existing condition, and they need to cover the repair. They can’t certify a truck that had previous issues. If they had any pictures of the truck on their website when it was for sale, try getting those as well to show them the proof. If they try to worm out of the repair as I suspect they will, be looking for an email from Ford with the survey. I will say this...you catch more flies with honey. Be patient if you can. People will be a lot more willing to help you when you’re courteous. With that being said, make sure to let them know that you aren’t just going to drop it and let it go away. I feel like that’s what my dealer originally thought about me. But they didn't know me!!!
