Identifying engine size
For starters, how many cylinders does it have? This is easy to tell by counting the number of spark plugs (or spark plug wires). This will tell you whether you have an Inline 4 Cylinder or a V-6.
You can also go by the VIN, one of the characters denotes the engine type. Decoding the VIN
I also am not sure what the engine options were in '90.

Howdy! jvd142;Congrats on having the courage to become "one of us here @ FTE".
I'm also working on learning the many complexities of Automotive Electronics myself; which are what vehicles are now-a-days.
Place your postings + we'll do our best to guide you along.
Following PSKSAM2's advice is a great place to start and acquire a repair manual to assist in teaching yourself too! The engine options for 90's 4 bangers are; I believe are: 2.0 + 2.3. (My 90 Ranger 2.3L EFI 2wd Mazda 5 sp has 2 plugs per cylinder; better emissions!)
