Just for the Fun of it ... I guess you could stack 2 in front of a tranny and have over and underdrive, the extra sticks would be real Kewl.
and maybe end up with a 2 inch driveshaft
I don't have the money to play with such things myself, BUT I have seen similar done on an old Rat Rod Show Car... IF I come across a picture I'll post it.
I have no idea how Practical it was either.
Those advance adapters boxes are only 7 1/2" long, so even with two 15" is all that will have to come out of the drive shaft. It's doable. But costly, they could have made a 3 speed box that was roughly 10 3/4" long and that would have been perfect.
Two boxes at 1500 a pop and I could buy a real heavy transmission and divorced transfer case cheaper than that used, but then I would have a 2 inch drive shaft!
Back in the good old days all semi's and other heavy trucks had 5 speed main boxes and 3 or 4 speed Brownies so you split each main box gear 3 times with the Brownie as needed which was most all the time when loaded. The 5 with 3's took some skill to shift but then the 13 speed Roadrangers came out and revolutionized the heavy truck trans industry. You can almost train a monkey to shift a 13 speed. They also made some way smaller Brownies that could be mounted behind the main box in a pickup but they got to be hard to find nowadays.
yepper ^^^^^^^^ we had the 5X3 in our Autocars that we did tire testing on..... Spicer 8251 main, 8031c aux trans we had a couple with the V12 engines, they were all supercharged back in the day too.
Picked up a 94’ dan’s 60 for the 87. Truck is 32 years old and i’m sure the bushings in the front end have never been changed. I can feel it sometimes when turning sharply or reversing out of my nuclear testing site of a driveway. I picked up half of the 94 frame with an idi e40d and tc. I already sold the trans for 250 so I practically made 50 dollars. The axle isn’t in the best of shape so a refresh is required. Would you guys do the gears? or just bearings and regular front end components? Was a PIA to get this on a landscaping trailer. I did keep the front driveshaft. Hoping maybe down the line id get lucky to have my current driveshaft fit or make this one work with new u joints.
