What is this!!

I bought a '93 F250 4wd w/a 5.8 at an auction from the city. Needs a lot of work. I don't know what this part does! It blows out a LOT of air, the more rpm's the more air. I'm refering to the black canister looking thing above the oil cap. It looks like there should be a hose connected , but theres nothing. Thanks for any help.

Yeah, Ive got one on my 89 also except mine faces the passanger fender..looks like its part of the air-pump system. Ive been drivin the truck for a few years and it never affected anything. No hose was ever hooked up to it......maybe some kind of pressure relief valve. Im curious myself. Nothing in the haynes manual about it.

If it is what I am thinking of it is the first picture. It is some sort of air bypass for the smog pump. It pushes out air when there is no vacuum supplied to the valve at the end of the hose, second picture. The vacuum is controlled by the TAB/TAD solenoids in the third picture. Check to see if the vacuum line has vacuum and if it doesn't the check the TAB/TAD solenoids to see if they are working correctly. There are instructions in the Haynes manual on how to do that. If you don't have one let me know and I will relay the information. Sorry about the dirty pictures I finally got some rain and I had to let the old girl run free through the mud.
