Broke down, rebuild?? help

I was driving my truck home all of a sudden it shut down. I jumped out after trying to start it and found out my battery was dead. New altanator no big deal I had one on the shelf in my garage. Unfortuanatly Garage was to far to walk to so had to have it towed to the tow truck drivers garage. Big Mistake get a phone call the next day Garage said I spun a bearing. Drove down to listen to the motor. When I got there and started up the truck no noise at all from the truck at idle no knocking nothing crawled underneath to listen to the oil pan see if I could here the bearing, nothing drove it down the road put the pedal to the floor and the truck stumbled bogged down and backfired between the manifold and the exhaust pipe where I knew there was a leak. The mechanic explained that was my problem and a motor with a spun bearing will do that... I told him I would pick it up tommorrow. Am I right the engine is fine it sounds like a carb issue to me. PLEASE advise I dont want to be taken for a rebuild on my motor but I also dont want to risk breaking down...

Well first off you need a new mechanic. Spun bearing will cause a knock not a miss. You may have jumped a tooth on the timing chain or sheared the pin on the distributor drive. How many miles?

around 85,000 miles I was going to replace my distributor because when I replace my oil pump i snaped the the bushing that goes on the shaft to hold down the gear The gear seemed tight maybe it worked itself loose?

That "mechanic" is full of a vile substance that polite language (and FTE guidelines) does not allow us to name.

I would suggest you get your truck anay from that guy as soon as possible, hopefully before something "mysterious" happens to your truck or its engine and requires more expensive remediation.

I've got to go with everyone else here. Get your truck out of there asap! People like that shouldn't be turning wrenches, they should be selling cars.
