Above mentioned van wanders all over the road. installed new ball joints and tires, had it aligned, had the alignment checked because handling got worse! Anyway, in looking at the rubber bumpers on the frame above the I-beams, it seems that they are being hit fairly often. Is it possible that the springs are weak, allowing the geometry of the front end to change too much? I have had this van for about 30K and problem is getting steadily worse. Also, are there any van users groups around? Other than this problem, (and the ABS light staying on), this van has been great. Would like to keep it for another couple of years at least.
I had that problem on my 89 van. Took up the slack in the steering box with the adjustment screw on top of the box. I turned it in 1/8 of a turn at a time until the steering felt right. Don't want to go too far with it or you can lose return-to-center or damage the box.
The problem is probably just the fact that noone can do a proper alignment anymore. Take it to another place and make them drive it and adjust it until it's right. Don't just let them make a few adjustments and kick it out the door. The problem is that the tie rod ends, and all the steering linkage is getting old and the holes get wallered out. The expensive fix is to replace it all the cheaper one is to take to a GOOD alignment shop and make the do it and re-do it until it is right.
