The 4.8 V8 rumor thread

Since this rumor seems to be circulating again in the last few days (you’ll find several recent articles doing a Google search), I thought I would start a thread where this could be discussed rather than sprinkling the discussion among a couple of other threads like what is happening now.

So, if anyone has more information, has found any meaningful articles or knows someone involved with this possible future engine, let’s lost it here.

Most articles in recent days look like this. Nothing more than the speculation we saw in the 2016 articles.

https://www.motor1.com/news/367016/2...ew-engine/amp/

But if the rumors are true, the all aluminum 5.0 (307 version) Coyote will have had a very short run.

Wonder if this would be a truly new design, or is it the latest 5L coyote with steel sleeves (hence reducing the displacement a bit)?

That, and it would sure be neat if they turbocharged it.

There just isn’t much info out there. Everything would be speculation.

Sleeve the current 5.0 and you’ve pretty much gone back to the first gen design. Maybe it will be an all new design. Maybe it will still be Triton/Modular based or based off of the 6.2. There’s just no telling at this point.

I remember reading some time back, when the 6.2 Boss was being developed, it was designed to be as small as 5 liters and as large as 7. Ford has done very little with this engine.

So far, just speculation. as usual, the threads on FTE will rum rampant until actual details are released, and then go quiet.

2021 Ford F-150 Will Not Get A 4.8L V8 Engine After All

This article is hot off the press. No way to know who's telling the truth as this article quite literally recants an earlier fordauthority article that confirmed the engine and even offered power numbers.

We will see.

Since we're all here speculating:

Displacement:
3,496cc / 6 = ~582.7cc * 8 = ~4,661.3cc + 1.903% = ~4,750.03cc which rounds to 4.8l
Would this be a 60-degree block with two more cylinders? It wouldn't be the first time Ford produced a 60-degree V8. It also wouldn't be the first time Ford added two cylinders to an existing design to make it bigger and take advantage of production efficiencies. Slightly longer stroke to make the rumored displacement. Now this V8 fits the F150, and also might fit in a RWD Explorer and Mustang of similar heritage, facing the same transmission as the 3.5EB currently does.
Or . . . maybe this is a downsized 5.0?
Or . . . maybe this is a new 4.8 90-degree?
Or . . . maybe it is really a 4.7 60-degree? This would negate the need to add that 1.903% above while adding parts commonality.

Going with the original rumor that it is a 4.8l, based on power density of the current Ecoboost:

Power Density (Standard Ecoboost 3.5):
375HP / 3,496cc = ~0.107HP/cc * 4,750.03cc = ~509.5HP
So . . . now (if it fits) we're in Durango SRT territory in an Explorer and 24.5HP more than a Challenger 392

Power Density (Raptor/Navigator/Platinum Ecoboost 3.5):
450HP / 3,496cc = ~0.129HP/cc * 4,750.03cc = ~611.4HP
So . . . now (if it fits) we're well past Durango SRT territory in an Explorer and 126.4HP past a Challenger 392

Power Density (GT Ecoboost 3.5) (since I'm here with a calculator):
647HP / 3,496cc = ~0.185HP/cc * 4,750.03cc = ~879.1HP
So . . . now we're well more than anything Hellcat and 82.1HP more than a Challenger Hellcat Redeye
. . . and 229.1HP more than a Camaro ZL1
. . . and 124.1 more than the most powerful Corvette.

Math is fun. Comments?
