Hello again! I have a 2015 F250 CC 4X4, Powerstroke under the hood. Its got 63,000 on it.
I had changed the transfer case fluid and did a trans service. On the trans, drained it, then dropped the pan, installed new Motorcraft filter, cleaned everything up, put the magnet back on the pan in the same spot. Motorcraft Mercon LV was used in both.
Now, when the truck is cold, shifting from park to drive or reverse, or going between those 2 gears, I get a loud, metallic click from the trans. It will go away once the truck is driven a few miles. So, I set the parking brake, had an assistant start the truck, and switch the gears. The click is coming from the pan area. If I put 1 hand on the pan, you can feel it also, like someone is smacking it with a hammer. I cannot feel it in the bell housing or the tail assembly. What could this possibly be? It was not there before servicing. I also noticed when going from reverse to drive or vice versa, the driveshaft will rotate about 1/8 turn. When the truck is off, I cannot rotate the driveshaft by hand.
Well you are saying it doesn't do it when warm and this started after service. I would verify your fluid level as this sounds like a delayed engagement due to low fluid.
Fluid level is perfect. Might have to run it by a trans shop, but it will have to be cold for him to hear it. But you know how shops are, first thing they say is "needs a rebuild"
Are you sure the old orangy-pink sealing ring was pulled out of the valve body after removing the old filter before you smacked the new filter in place (i.e. there aren't two sealing rings in there)?
Asking because this will cause the trans to draw air around the filter and the spool valves to make noise when the solenoids actuate them as you're hearing.

Uuuhhh, i think so. I am just about positive that i did check to make sure it came out with the old filter.
I did this service back in june, so it looks like im pulling the pan again. Unfortunately i cant do it for 2 more weeks. I assume this condition would occur when tje trans is cold and not when warm?
It would make sense that it does it only when cold because the fluid level may rise just enough once it has warmed up to stop it from sucking air.
Well, i guess the smart thing to do is to pull it all apart again. If i did forget to temove the old gasket ring, will the one on tje new filter be damaged? I already have to buy more fluid. Second, what damage could i have done to the trans running it like this for 3 months. I guess my bad for waiting so long to look into it.
I am hauling the camper to the beach this long weekend and not looking forward to pulling this apart at night after work.
Well, dropped the pan again today. Removed the filter and there was no parts of the old o ring seal left in there from the old filter. Put in yet another new filter, fluid and put it all back together. Torqued everything down to spec,,,,,,
Well, the noise is still there. Drove it today without the radio on, and also noticed it will make the same noise coming to a stop and it downshifts from 2 to 1. Otherwise, the trans behaves normally. What the hell is this?
I have 13 months an 38K miles left on an extended warranty, so I guess I am just going to drive it until?? But, you know, it will finally gernade about 3 days befor a vacation.
Hey boater dude, did you check for any codes at all? Maybe take it to a dealer so one of the service guys can experience it. I'm not experienced with transmissions at all, so I really don't have anything else.

I don't have a cel on, but i dont know if trans codes do that. Here, there is a shortage of techs that work on these trucks. 3 different dealers all quote about 3 weeks to even look at it.
I gotta change my user name, makes me sound a little light in the loafers.........
