I know I have seen this asked on here before but I can`t find it. When I for instance, back out of the driveway then put it into drive there is some kind of bump sound coming from, it feels like, under the truck. It doesn`t do it every time or even every other time, just every once in a while. Any ideas??
If you have a few minutes, go do a search at the top of the page, type in "clunk" as the criteria and then move down and perform your search in the "Super Duty" forum.
There you will see a ton of people that have solved the "clunk" problem by removing the rear drive shaft and greasing the yoke.
Mine 'clunks' only when the A/C is on before I start the truck. About 15-30 seconds later, there is a clunk that I can feel. Feels like it is under the truck. Come to find out, it was only a vent damper closing.
I had a 2000 SD,that had the same problem. In reading my PSR magazine I found a TSB . that identified the problem, The A/C Accumulator had to be replaced under warranty. I now have a 2003 with the same noise, Ford told me it is not something that I should be concerned about. It seems the refrigerant drains out of the accumulator over night and during startup in the AM it rushes to fill the void ,thus the thump you hear.

Don't know about the A/C thing, but the procedure in this link has worked for many who complained of a clunk when engaging drive.
