I'm bringing this truck back to life after a few years of stagnation. Starts and runs fine until reaching operating temperature, then it shuts down. Does not overheat, just shuts off and won't start till it cools. Will then run until reheated and then shuts off again. Have replaced or cleaned most of fuel system. Thoughts?
1. Do you hear the fuel pumps run for one second and then quit when you turn the key to just the run position when this happens?
2. Do you have spark when this happens?
I assume it still has spark because it starts right back up after a few minutes. I have replaced most of the fuel system recently (low pressure pumps in both tanks, high pressure pump after tank switch, fuel pressure regulator etc.) and have solid pressure at the rail.
Coolant temp sensor may be malfunctioning (not sure if it has the same function on an 88' as a 90'). I know I had issues with it on my truck. Also, I would check the ignition module.
Heat from the engine could make an already poor connection fail and cause for example the fuel pump not getting 12v. So checking for fuel and spark at the time the truck won't start first is a good start.
Thank you guys for responding. For context, I am neither a mechanic nor mechanically inclined and may not understand exactly why you suggest something. Please give a reason why with your suggestions. I am also not currently working on the vehicle (as in right now) I'll have to try stuff when I can physically get back to work on the truck, I'll touch back then. The motor is a 351 in an XLT Lariat 4x4. I do appreciate your input, also am searching on youtube for video and mechanic support but may not always know simple things due to my lack of experience in this field. For example: it would never have occurred to me that the coil could be bad given these symptoms or that the high pressure fuel pump connection could be getting hot enough to shut off the motor.
a coil can break down when hot and the engine will die.
but run fine once the coil cools off .
if you have proper fuel pressure, the only other thing it could possible be is a bad ignition part.
