i just put a new 302, rebuilt three speed thany, and a new transfer case on my EB (I got it with a bad motor and i went all out), and at highway speeds she seems to rev awfully high like 3000 rpm at 50 mph is this normal and if not are there any adjustments i can make? or should i change the gears in my difs, basicaly what should i do in other words helllllllp!
You didn't say much about your setup. What was in it before? What's in it now?
Are you sure it's running 3k at 50mph? That's awful high. If you have an automatic (you didn't say) it sounds like it might not be shifting into 3rd gear. Do you have a tachometer?
I wouldn't worry about rear end ratios at all. No gear ratio is going to affect your engine speed as much as yours is.
And yes, most newer broncos have overdrive trannies.
Tell us what transmission you have, what size your tires are, and your gear ratio for starters. Then at least we'll know where the revs should be.
my EB is an 81 it has a three speed automatic mated to a 302 this is the first for project ive done so i dont know what the designation numbers are for the trannys, but this is the same set up it had when i got it. I am unsure about the gears I havent changed them. I know just about as much as you know about it at this point. I know the exaust doesnt have any thing to do with it but it does have true 2.5 in. flowmaster duals thats the only mod that i know of.
Look at the transmission pan..
Most likely a C6 in a bronco if its automatic 3 speed
If the pan is square... its a C4
if its a square w/ a little "jag" its a C6
C6s have 6 sides... instead of 4... but its almost a square..
A little confused. Are you saying that it didn't rev this high before you rebuilt the engine. Rebuilding the engine should have no affect on the rpms at a given speed. You said you had a new auto tranny dropped in. Make sure the linkage is ok and that it is not shifting into second when the indicator is actually on drive. This would mean it is not shifting into 3rd. All the 3 spd autos I know of have a 1:1 3rd gear and should not have changed with the new tranny. If the engine wasn't running and you just got it running then I would look at the rear diff. If the rear gears were 3.08 but someone put in 3.73 this would jump your rpms up by about 400-500.
Good thought, Jeep. My money's on the linkage with the new transmission. A close second is that the rebuild wasn't done right and the tranny can't shift into 3rd.
Did a big Bronco ever come with a C4? I thought all the earlier automatics were C6s? (up until the AOD/E4OD of course)
