Come to think of it the worst oil leaking cummins i know of runs on delvac. May be it, thanks anyway!! I have seen a few late 70's F series fitted with Perkins diesels, how do you reckon they would go?
Originally posted by roan65 bigbully, I looked threw your pics, nice job!! Did you have to cut your cross member down?
That is interesting about the Delvac. I usually use dino-oil, but I have thought about switching to Delvac though. Many of the truckers around here use it. ...then again maybe I won't!
what did you guys do about fuel tanks??
Ya I was Dumbfounded when my friend told me the Delvac might cause oil leaks but He told me a story and I started to believe. He owns a small gas station and this one company fills up there that has 6 trucks, They used to run Rotella and switched to Delvac. He told me they buy double amounts of Delvac then what they used to buy Rotella In between changes. So I asked one of the drivers that I know personally and he confirmed Oil consumption to be close to double So It really got me to thinking about changing and I'm glad I did.
Yes The cross member has to be cut app. 2 1/4 inches for the engine to sit down where it needs to be. What do you mean About the fuel tanks? Im useing the stock tanks and I had to Put return feeds into them.
I heard that the diesel will leach the zinc plating out of the older tanks and cause problems in the fuel system. Only way to fix it is to coat the inside of the tanks or go to plastic ones.
Do you know which year model Dodge went from right hand transfercase output to left on their 3/4 tons? Or vice versa.
I think it was 1995 when they changed. Well Ive heard things about the fuel tanks too but NOTHING Confirmed. I only heard it will plug the fuel filter eventully. Oh Well does anyone have any Hard Facts? If so i would like to hear them.
Has anyone looked into the cummins 3.9L ISB? I saw specs on one that they are putting into the Daewoo truck. 150 bhp and 405 ft. lbs @1700 rpm. That's better than the old 6.9 l idi.
What exact modle cummins did you use and what exactly did you do to it to get the estimated 250 horsepower? I am dead set on going diesel and the cummins seems like a better idea than the 7.3,
I used a 93 model. The 94 and up have better pumps but this one is Good enough for me. As far as the power, I have done a bunch of adjustments to the pump. There is still more but Im getting to the point Im afraid of breaking stuff. I might go with POD injectors later on but Its doing real well right now.
Get the POD's, you won't be sorry. I have them in my '93 and it really woke it up. A 16 cm^2 hot side turbine housing or a 12cm^2 wastegated housing helps too. I had the first pump turned up a bunch and the fuel plate springs fragged. With the POD's you can run the pump full fuel screw at stock or slightly above.
Big Bully,
I looked up some different cummins engines and I think yours is a 6BTA5.9?? they also seem to make a 8.7L as well, do you think it could be used instead of the 5.9? Also how much does the cummins you used weigh? and do you think it would be easy enough to fit an intercooler?
335C
the 8.7 is BIG. When you use it, there is a tbunch of fab work that would need to be done. I have only seen one truck with it done. The 5.9 is much easier.
The 6bta weighs about 1100 lbs dressed out. I have seen pictures of a C series engine in a Ford. Go to the turbodieselregister and do a search for C-Series Man. It was quite a rig.
My F250 only has a 302 Cleveland, not a 460 BB, what kind of front springs would I need for half a ton of cummins diesel? Iam an army engineer and I had a look at one of our machines today, the LET (Light Engineering Tractor) and it has a turboed 6B cummins. It looks like it would be a tight fit with the radiator an all. Would an electric fan save any room?
It is a tight fit. My rear valve cover is about 3/4" from the firewall and do not have room to run the stock fan and radiator. The '93 Dodge radaitor has been recommended to me, but I am not to the point of deciding that yet. It may hinge on a stock hood and fenders vs tilt glass front end. My plan is to run electric fan(s).
I plan to run the stock springs with one full leaf added and arched about 4" or so match the highboy rear leaf spring blocks.

Im running the stock Cummins Fan and clutch and I use the biggest radiator they make for a 79 ford pickup (4 row BIG tank)
I have plenty of room and I also used the 460 Fan Shroud after some mod work. I had another guy tell me that I had to use electric fans, All I can say is he IS WRONG..
