My 2008 6.4 diesel will suddenly peg the temperature gauge and go into limp mode. Changed out bad fan clutch and both thermostats. Still happening.
Happens when towing fifth wheel or pushing hard down the freeway. Slow down or stop and the temp gauge quickly returns to normal.
I’m told there is programming that does this when the oil temp gets (15?) degrees hotter than the coolant temperature. probably needs new inter cooler or oil cooler.
Going to find out this week.
When you are towing and the temps get hot does the clutch fan come on high? Do you hear and airplane sound under the hood? If not then look at the clutch fan sensor.
With the IDS program ford uses you could command the clutch fan o cycle and check it.
