It wasnt the steering rod, it wasnt the ball joints the king pins the gearbox itself, or any of the other $500 worth of stuff i replaced, the cab mount was bad and caused it to settle some, put a binding on the darn thing, soon as i jacked up the body and braced it up temporary style with a board, my steering is now perfect. unfortunly i forgot to readjust the steering gearbox and blew the topseal out on the way to work. Now i got to fix that. does it ever end lol
I crawled under mine yesterday trying to look at the cab mounts on mine. I seem to notice little doors on the front with a bolt on the top. I presume this is the access to get to the top of the bushing. Mine seem to look ok on the outside, but I'm still wondering what the insides look like. I think I'm gonna try to take those covers off, and see what I can see. Know what you mean. If it ain't one thing , it's something else. '' MK
Hey Opiewan!
What was the original complaint? The steering on my poor old 72 feels like I am driving on Ice. One good pot hole and we make an unscheduled lane change. Im getting ready to overhaul the complete front end. I was wondering what the symptoms were on your truck?
mine was like this, you go to turn and as you complete the turn he wheel stays pointing in the direction of the turn, it would not come back to center. other then that when i drove it it was fine, no complaints at all, just the steering thing.
yes the mount on the drivers side was bad, body settled down and was riding on the frame, steering rod was rubbing on the colum shaft right at the firewall, hense the not ruturning to center cause the shaft was rubbing and not letting it.
It sounds like you found the problem. But I'd make sure you get the steering box set right when you get it back together. Not returning to center can also be caused by the steering gear being too tight. In fact, I've got a hunch thats why it blew. The cab mount binding must have masked an overtightened steering gear, which causes nearly the same exact symptom. MK
no it isnt wasnt set too tight, awhile back i reset the gear. As a matter of fact i loosened it up a little to make steering have more play so i could turn it easier. i just put this gear box in a month or so ago. i just didnt notice the cab mount falling apart. It is what caused the problem. Now that my body is braced back into the right height and i readjusted the gear box to be alighned with everything else, my steering problem is gone. Drives like a new truck, and it should because i have replaced everything that is linked to the steering.
