Robert, I've been researching this myself. I found that the hidden antennas work good in glass bodies and "ok" in steel on fm, but not am.The folks I talked with all put them in the headliner, above the windshield. I have almost decided on a exterior mounted antenna, although I have been toying with using my bed on my 53 as the antenna. The rear fenders and running boards are glass and the bed is mounted on rubber pads. I know that Ford used the wire in the roof insert on early cars.Sounds goofy I know, but any thoughts?
I just took a common Pep Boys antenna and mounted it under the running board, parallel to the ground. It is in a bracket at the mounting end similar to what it would be if mounted to a fender so that it is electrically grounded like it is designed to be. I then just used short sections of fuel line hose over it where it clamps up under the running board so the antenna mast itself isn't grounded. It seems to work just as good as my modern cars, both in the city and in the mountains.
(If the speed of light is so darn fast, what is the speed of dark?)
ive seen different ways to mount them and the hidden way was the way i was going to go. but......... i got an electric one and frenched it in the left side of the cowl doesnt look to bad.
I just put a cheap electric antennae in the stock location. I like Bob Expresses idea though. Not sure how long it would last in my climate, but who cares if you use a cheap one.
Great idea Bob, I was going to put it in the headliner until now. I seen one at a show a while back that was mounted in the "rolled" part of the bed. Couldn't see how it was mounted though, the only visable part was the wire between the cab/bed. Never did see the owner find out about reception. Bad part about it though is if something happened to it you'd have to remove the bed to get it. I'll pass on that one, just a little FYI.
