I bought a 2004/05 Ford F250 4x4 from a wrecking yard, my friend owns the yard and told me it was a good truck that needed some parts and a home, I have a 2000 7.3 that is a great truck. I bought the truck for $1.00 so it's not like my buddy was screwing me. I got the truck and found out it needs a ECM, KEYS, ENGINE WIRING HARNESS, POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE BATTER WIRING HARNESS, TAIL LIGHTS, MIRRORS, SHOCKS, FRONT WINDOW SWITCHES, AC CONTROL GAUGES, RADIO and I'm sure there are other things. I'm no ford mechanic, on the VIN tag it says manufacturer date is 12/04 the ppl at the place I bought my ECM says it's an 05. I guess my question is, what year models can I pick parts from? I have no clue when it comes to all this. I was able to purchase a programmed computer and set of keys but the rest, I'm lost.
Sounds like you have yourself a fun project. You can always call a Ford Dealership and talk with the people in the parts department and give them your VIN and they will help you with the correct parts for your truck.
Eric, sounds like a fun project. For a buck you can't go wrong. What engine is in the thing? I believe the 99 - 2010 are the same "generation". Unfortunately that does not mean that the parts are interchangeable. It really depends on the details. Each year of a generation Ford makes enhancements. Being the owner of a 3rd generation 250 I have a bit of an idea on what's changed. How about posting some pictures? A buck huh? I'm jealous. Being newly retired sounds like something to keep me busy. Anyway, back on topic the "generations" are:
