I'm trying to change out my fuel filters and having an issue... I changed the one under the hood no problem. I tried doing the water separator one and it keeps running diesel out (gallons!) So I went into the handy Ford manual and see that I need to disconnect the fuel line quick connect in the fuel pump.
My issue/question is this: How the heck do you reach it and take it off?
On my 2019, I used the little yellow petcock to drain it - about a gallon. Then drop and replace the filter. Then do the one in the engine bay. Then prime the system. You didn't happen to have the engine in acc mode or anything did you? Maybe the pump kept running? Sorry not more help, didn't run into the issue you describe, but the procedure was a little different it seems.
What year is your truck? If I remember right, the manual describes disconnecting a fuel line on the 17's only. Otherwise, only about a half gallon should come out. I dont know if or why it would make a difference, but maybe changing the under hood filter first has something to do with it. Probably not.

Maybe a sensor in the engine one that tries to prime the lines, but when you open underneath, it can never get primed? OP, did you hear the fuel pump running?
I assume the OP has an early 2017 (Job 1). The early 17 builds lacked a check valve that was later added to the job 2 2017+ trucks. Because of this, there is nothing to stop fuel from siphoning out of the tank when you open the drain valve on the water separator. Easiest way around this is to run the tank low so gravity overcomes the suction.
So... I let my truck get down to 30 miles or so left in the tank and am still having the same issue. I parked on a flat driveway, opened the water separator valve and over a gallon came out. I decided to shut it so I wouldn't run out of fuel lol.

Any other suggestions?
Did you disconnect the line that the manual says to do for the 17's?
I have the same problem. Usually have to open drain valve and see if it stops. Then take fuel cap off and leave it open for a few minutes. Then open drain valve and see if it stops. Put the fuel cap back on, see if it helps. I have not found the magical trick for my 17.

Drained my Job 2 2017 (manufactured in Aug'17) water separator about a week ago to replace the plastic drain valve with a billet aluminum valve (link below), and less than 2 quarts came out. Did not open the fuel tank cap, but my fuel level was down to the DTE-warning level of 50 miles left until empty.
Just changed mine on my '17 Job 1 truck, for the second time, I guess I got lucky. first time I drained about a gallon of fuel before it stopped. second time was a little more trouble. First try it wouldn't stop, can't get my hand up to disconnect line, tried all the above options so I just closed the drain after draining about 2 1/2 gallons. Tried again the next day after needing to drive the truck, and it only drained about a gallon and stopped, The only difference was I disconnected the sensor on the bottom of the housing, before I stated draining don't know if that helped or not.
