Anyone swapped a 385 series into a 57-60 with the Toyota power steering box? I'm trying to settle on what header will fit.
There are some guys around that have put 460's and 429's in their fridges. I have a 429 setting in the barn that I have been thinking about but it is a '72 and that was not a great year for 385 series.
Pretty sure they are D2 and D0 were the desirable ones.
You are correct in 72 compression ratios across the whole engine line up dropped, the 385 compression ratio was 8.5:1 across the line The only exception to this was the 429 P.I engines that sported the D20E heads. These heads have pushrod guide plates and screw-in rocker studs with a chamber size of about 92 cc's with a compression ratio of about 9:1. The port sizes of the D20E heads are slotted in between the CJ and standard passenger car heads.
My 400 fits fine with the CPP steering box. Only clearance issue would be the exhaust manifold. I don't know about the big blocks, but my factory manifold dumps kind of in the center, not the back, so I just ran the exhaust under the oil pan, then turned it back to run next to the passenger side pipe. Might have to look at shorty headers to find a set that dumps more in the center of the block.
