Today I was going to go somewhere, went to start my truck, it turned over once then stopped. It was turning fine, then just stopped. I proceeded to turn the key again and it just clicked the starter.
Then I removed all the spark plugs, thinking it was hydrolocked somehow. No good. Still doesn't turn even with the plugs out.
I know it's not the accessories holding it back, I can push the belt for the alternator and see that turn, and the other belt that goes to the AC, PS, and fan is so loose I can turn the fan by hand.
I drove this thing a few days ago, and it ran fine.
I've got most of the parts for my 390, but it's a long way from being completed, and I dont want to rush it.
I thought I added this, but I guess I didn't. I cannot turn the motor by hand. I had a ratchet with a breaker bar on the end bolt of the crank. It WILL NOT TURN in either direction.
It's got plenty of oil in it, right up by the top of the safe area on the dipstick. I'll change it tomorrow, if I see it flow green I'll let everyone know!
My latest theory is that something on the starter gear disintegrated and wedged itself in the flywheel, locking it up. The starter will be coming out and inspected shortly.
Drop the pan and check your bearing situation, one of my friends had a chevy ( i think that was his problem ) which 3 rod bearing were seized, had plenty of oil and everything, but decided it was going to go.
my jeep does this but all i have to do is leave it in gear and push it a little bit. its missing a tooth on the flywheel and sometimes it gets lined up with the starter.
Sounds like the starter bendix got wedged on the flywheel.
There again, had a friend with a chevy/auto did the same thing. They thought motor was junk and pulled it. Oops, then found out motor turned over easily. Hmmm, must have been the starter after all.
Got it fixed. Pulled the starter and found part of a tooth missing. Pulled the bellhousing dust cover and found the tooth. Went to napa and got a new starter. Put it in, problem fixed. Thanks to everybody that helped!
