I just got my first powerstroke, a 1997 dually. The truck upshift's from 2nd to 4th often bypassing 3rd. Even when towing up hill. It will only stay in 3rd if I really have my foot down. Is this normal?
Mine (I have 2 each 97 dually's with E4OD's) both will do that same exact thing. (Usually mine will hit 3rd -but just for a second or two...)
I try not to push my RPM's if possible - and that's when the skip happens.
But if I put put my foot into it - just a little - they go into - and stay in 3rd until a normal shift into 4th.
I have driven mine for 10 years - and I still don't always get my foot just right to keep em from skipping.
I guess it's normal - I have 2 of them that do it...?
That could be what's happening z31
On both of mine - It's as if there is another gear - it's like - from 1st, to 2nd is always a little drawn out with a slightly hard shift. Then from 2nd to 3rd it's like it hits a gear - then jumps into 4th - but I'm actually still in 3rd... - then it gently (actually) shifts smoothly into 4th (OD)

One of my trucks is stock and does the above.
The other truck has the older Edge programmer installed (lowest setting) and it makes the 1st to 2nd shift real long and drug out with a harder shift than the stock truck.
But the 2nd to 3rd to 4th shifts are the same in both.
Yeah, many folks feel the torque converter locking up and think that's a shift into another gear. The interplay between the lockup clutch and third gear and fourth gear / overdrive can be misleading as to what's going on down there.
This is a new truck for me and I am just putting her to work. I am not sure of anything. I am on that learning curve.
I always had manual tranny's. I would like to be able to hold that gear after 2nd when I am on a steep climb. There doesn't seem a way to manually do it. Or is there?
