Okay, so I was driving down the highway and the engine cut out and died. I coasted to a stop and got someone to get me some diesel fuel because it was above a quarter tank, but it had gone dry on me before.....start simple right? Long story short, I got plenty of fuel in the tank and that still did not make a difference. I would get a "check engine soon" light on the dash and then go off,but it would continue to stall out shortly afterwards. The symptom was that the rpm gauge would cut out a little and then go back to running...….then all of a sudden it would just die. I restarted it a few times then I had to have it towed. It didn't start up on the first try all the time.....it would run for a 1/4 mile then die. I got the idea that maybe I didn't have fuel pressure, but after examining the filter it didn't look bad at all and when I put it back together and didn't get the gasket back on correctly that there was plenty of fuel pressure since it squirted all over until I got the gasket on correctly. That is about all the information I can tell about it. Thank you for any and all help....this forum has saved me many times before and I am very thankful for that!!!
I actually talked with a buddy and he suggested that I take a look at the cps......I've actually changed them a couple of times before. I actually had a new one in the glove box of my truck In an unopened package. I installed it and ran it for 15-20 minutes in the driveway and had no problems. I also took it for a short ride and still no issues. I had started it earlier today and it started right up, but with the old cps still in it. It ran for 3 or 4 minutes then died right out. I think I got it solved for now.....(fingers crossed). I was hoping that it was not the IPR because that is a big ticket item for sure. Thanks for the help.....do you guys know of a good code scanner that works good with these trucks?
Score another one for the old school "replace the CPS"!
Even so, eyeball the tinnerman nut on the end of the IPR just to make sure it's still snug.
IMHO best scanner now is either Torque Pro or FORScan app on an android phone, along with an ELM327 bluetooth adapter. Google all that, you'll get a zillion links. Ignore anything older that 2019. FORScan on a windows device can do a bit more with an extended license but only if you need the extra bit.
If you want a stand alone scanner look up NGS. OE Ford service item, best possible but priced like it came out of Tutankhamun's tomb.
