Sounds like it's worth sinking some money into it. At least you know'll what you have. These vans have stood the test of time and can go many trouble free miles.
Not sure where it's at. I'm going to look for it tomorrow and see if I can find it. I would think it's on the top of the motor somewhere and as you suggest, likely on intake. However, I am also seeing mention of a cylinder head temp sensor and the vehicle supposedly has either/or not both.
With 200,000 miles, I would have replaced the radiator, they are disposable, I went with an all aluminum, improved core, only 2 row but twice the size as stock, never ran hot in the past, just the plastic tank split.
Well, new radiator is installed and so far it appears the problem is fixed. It's 91 deg here today and I've driven it around 25 miles and Max AC on and the temp gauge remains about 1/2 way. On the other hand, I ran it by car parts store to have them run a code scan on it and they found a code for 'Cylinder head temp' and 'Catalytic convertor inefficiency bank 2'. The gentleman checking it said he thinks likely cause of cylinder head temp is the catalytic convertor issue itself. . On one hand I wonder if that was the cause of the overheating problem from the get go but as I said, thus far it hasn't overheated and it is over 90 deg today. The other day when it overheated prior to replacing radiator it overheated within 5 miles of driving. I had him clear the codes and will go back in a few days to get it checked again.
I had the codes erased with a code scanner. I'll wait a couple days and have it scanned again. So long as it doesn't actually overheat again I'm not going to worry too much about it.
A plugged cat will heat up an engine, I've seen one so bad it would cause the engine to quit after running a few minutes, add a bad cat to a clogged radiator and you would have a boil over.
Code scanner noted cat insufficiency on bank 2. Is that the passenger side? It appears that the catalytic converters on these trucks are a 2 part proposition. A new assembly comes with both and the connecting pipe. They look like resonators.

Bank 2 on the Modular Motors is on the driver's or left side.
